Dunleavy yields to his increasingly psychotic inclinations, while Carney draws strength from Church’s trusting nature. Yet amid the challenges of wresting control of the ship from the dead, the survivors display inspiring self-sacrifice and dedication to group welfare. The reappearances of such depraved characters as ex-cons TC and Carney and sadistic former TV evangelist Peter Dunleavy illustrate the abyss of evil at work, even as universal destruction looms. Medical student, Navy Reserve petty officer, and former stripper Rosa Escobedo joins heroic priest Xavier Church in leading the group. Survivors fleeing the zombie infestation of Omega Days seek food, electricity, and safety on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in Campbell’s somber sequel.

The back half of the book explores this family’s journey of self-discovery as they recover from tragedy, a haunted past, and an uncertain future. There is indeed a large-scale battle that is foreshadowed early, but it quickly morphs into a compelling series of character studies framed around a flawed family struggling to stay alive. More surprises are in store while progressing through the first half of the book, as the reader is led to believe that this will be an action-heavy, high fantasy epic of escalating battles, vengeance, and heroes rising from the ashes. Although technology isn’t at the forefront of the story, it does exist, and plays an important but minor role in the story. It initially appears to be set in a 19th century east-Asian society, but there are chapter 1 references to video games, holographic cell phone images, and wireless internet. M.L Wang’s The Sword of Kaigen is a book that is full of surprises. “Wholeness, she had learned, was not the absence of pain but the ability to hold it.” The criminalization of the Black American male is a psycho-politically engineered process designed to maintain the dependency and relative powerlessness of the Afrikan American and Pan Afrikan communities.īlack on Black violence, however, moves far beyond blaming the victimizer. The main thesis of this book is that the operational existence of Black on Black violence in the United States is psychologically and economically mandated by the White American-dominated status quo. The psychodynamics of the Black on Black criminal are presented here with a depth and clarity rarely seen before. Its explanatory perspectives on the socio-psychological and politico-economic causes of Black on Black violence are exceptionally insightful, incisive and iconoclastic. Black on Black violence: The psychodynamics of Black self-annihilation in the Service of White Domination represents a distinct milestone in criminology and Afrikan Studies. Working with them really changed the way I looked at museums. They'd found a Roman leather bikini as well, which reminded me to give him a girlfriend.Ī. That became the story in the Roman chapter of the book. It had been used to produce forged coins in Roman times, and the curator and I spent a while imagining together the little guy who might have used it, and how he might have been nearly caught. One day, for instance, one of them showed me a little clay mold they'd just dug up outside the Old London Wall. These curators and historians let me use their library, shared their knowledge and corrected my texts. I was very fortunate in finding a wonderful team to help me at the Museum of London which is the best and most creative historical museum I know. You turned to London next, a place you knew well. In case you haven’t gotten your copy yet (um, what have you even been doing?), or if you’ve realized the benefits of having more than one copy (there’s safety in numbers!), you should know that there are (at least) SEVEN different versions of Lord of Shadows available! One of my favorite surprises was the fact that ALL first edition copies include 40 (YES FORTY) never-before-seen runes by Val Friere (the original designer of the Shadowhunter runes) printed on the backside of the cover but otherwise, each of the various exclusive editions have a little something extra to set them apart. Lord of Shadows is finally here and I COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED! I’ve already devoured it once and I’m happily going through my second reading. His review is here and we largely agree on the pieces that most struck us, interestingly.Īnita Heiss (ed.) – “Growing up Aboriginal in Australia” This is another of the books that Bill from The Australian Legend kindly sent to me in January. Back to AusReading Month and I’m continuing my theme of reading books set around social justice and Australia’s Aboriginal peoples along a sort of curriculum: I read “ Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence” to get a background idea of the Stolen Generations and it gave me a short history of the experience of Aboriginal peoples from when the White invaders first came this book charts the experiences of Aboriginal people growing up from the 1940s to 1990s and “Another Day in the Colony” which I am starting now, will fill in a lot more gaps hopefully (I don’t think I’ll get to “Lies Damned Lies” but can save that for next AusReading Month of course). ReviewsĪlmost overnight, Anna and her family decide to flee their home. This commemorative hardback celebrates 50 years of this extraordinary story. It has gone on to become a beloved classic that is required reading for many children all over the world and is an unforgettable introduction to the real-life impact of the Second World War. Judith Kerr wrote When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit 50 years ago, based on her own journey, so that her own children would know where she came from and the lengths to which her parents went to keep her and her brother safe. This is the start of a huge adventure, sometimes frightening, very often funny and always exciting. But one day she and her brother Max are rushed out of Germany in alarming secrecy, away from everything they know. Anna is too busy with her schoolwork and tobogganing to listen to the talk of Hitler. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in it any longer, and you found, to your surprise, that your own father was one of those people. This beautiful new hardback celebrates fifty years of an unforgettable adventure that Michael Morpurgo called "The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read." This semi-autobiographical classic, written by the beloved Judith Kerr, tells the story of a Jewish family escaping Germany in the days before the Second World War. |
